Incoming defender John Souttar could be a ‘ready-made replacement’ for Connor Goldson at Rangers

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, incoming defender John Souttar could be a ‘ready-made replacement’ for Connor Goldson should he depart Rangers.

Goldson’s contract is set to expire at Ibrox over the summer, and although talks have begun over a new deal, he could depart on a free transfer following the conclusion of 2021/22.

The 29-year-old is one of several experienced campaigners who have entered the final few months of their existing contracts with the Glasgow giants.

Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor, Steven Davis and Leon Balogun are in a similar situation, but Rangers’ managing director Stewart Robertson revealed that there is still a possibility that Goldson could extend his stay.

When asked if they expect the 6 foot 2 ace to depart, he told Sky Sports (via The Scotsman): “We are not resigned to that at all. Ross Wilson is having talks with all the players whose contracts expire in the summer.”

However, provisions have already been made in the event of Goldson’s departure after Rangers secured the services of Souttar in the January transfer window.

The Gers signed the Scotland international on a pre-contract agreement last month from their domestic rivals Hearts, fending off interest from several Championship clubs.

Souttar had reportedly been keen to make the switch in January, but the two clubs were unable to agree a fee, meaning he will see out the remainder of the season with the capital club.

Following several serious injuries throughout his career, Souttar has started all but four league games this season, earning a recall to the national team setup.
