Ilkay Gundogan opens up on future and namechecks two potential destinations

Ilkay Gundogan has namechecked two potential destinations after life at Manchester City, but he has also not ruled out finishing his career at The Etihad.

Gundogan, who arrived from Borussia Dortmund in June 2016 for £21m, has developed into a key performer for Pep Guardiola. He’s a midfielder that Guardiola relies on and he has made over 248 appearances for the club.

The 31-year-old has also picked up plenty of silverware at The Etihad and another title success this season would be Gundogan’s fourth.

The Gelsenkirchen native has also won the EFL Cup four time and the FA Cup.

Gundogan is under contract for one more season and he has suggested her could hang his boots up at the club. Whether or not Manchester City would be prepared to offer a 32-year-old Gundogan a new contract in June 2023 is unclear.

But naturally Gundogan, whose parents were from Turkey, has admitted to thinking about his options.

“Turkey is naturally interesting because of my roots,” he told Sport1, via Sport Witness.

“I also like the USA; I’ve been there several times on holiday. At the moment, however, I’m not thinking about it.

“I still have a contract in Manchester until 2023, I’m very happy there both athletically and privately, and I can theoretically imagine ending my career at City.”

Gundogan, who has made 23 appearances in the Premier League this season, scoring six times has admitted to being nervous over the run-in.

City are top of the table with 80 points after a weekend when both City and Liverpool chalked up victories. And now with five games remaining Liverpool sit just a point behind with a better goal difference.
