"If I had to put money on it...": Journalist drops claim on 23 y/o Southampton outcast's future

Journalist Tom Barclay thinks Moussa Djenepo will “probably” leave Southampton at the end of the season.

Djenepo arrived at St Mary’s in 2019, but his days at the club could be numbered after an underwhelming campaign thus far.

The 23-year-old was linked with a deadline day move to Fenerbahce, yet this failed to materialise, and he remains in the Premier League for now.

His contract at Southampton is ticking down, though, and it is set to expire next year. The winger has hardly put a strong case forward for being offered a new deal as he has failed to register a single goal contribution this season.

He now seems to be no more than a bit-part player, having not featured at club level since October.

Barclay feels Djenepo has produced moments of quality during his time on the South Coast, but has pointed out that the £9.9m-rated forward has struggled to perform at a high level on a consistent basis.

When asked if Djenepo is more to likely to move on in the summer rather than signing a new contract with Southampton, Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: “If I had to put money on it – probably. I don’t think he’s lit it up, has he, since he’s joined? He’s still a young player, though, and we’ve seen glimpses.

“There’s been the odd performance, the odd bit of skill, the odd goal, that goal against Sheffield United last season. It was a really good goal to win that game.

“He’s just so inconsistent. I know wingers, by their very nature, can be inconsistent, but we haven’t really seen him kick on too much.”

As Barclay highlighted, Djenepo is still a young player who has plenty of time to work on his consistency.

However, Southampton have remained patient with him over the past three years, and he has rarely looked like repaying their faith.
