Flanked by a Sporting Lisbon press officer, Ruben Amorim took his seat at the top table and the cameras started rolling.

The 39-year-old was speaking to the world's media to look ahead to Sporting Lisbon's Champions League clash with Manchester City at the Estadio Jose Alvalade this evening.

But having been named as Manchester United's new head coach just three days earlier, it was inevitable that the line of questioning was going to be about much more than than just the the visit of Pep Guardiola's men.

Questions about both the game and his decision to accept the challenge of jumping into the void that was vacated by Erik ten Hag just over a week ago came and went. Amorim answered in detail and often with a smile, speaking confidently and eloquently in Portuguese.

However, one member of the English media in attendance pushed Amorim for an answer in English. He was not the first English reporter to put a question to the new United boss, but he was the first to request an answer in English.

"You could be a hero even before you get on a plane to Manchester," Sky Sports' Gary Cotterill said. "Has that crossed your mind? In English, please."

Amorim, who paused for a brief second, sporting a smirk, said: "Sorry, I cannot speak in English now."

Cotterill responded: "Why?"

Amorim, continuing to smile, said: "Sorry."

Cotterill, who was seemingly bemused by Amorim's apology, asked again: Why?"
