I visited England's highest waterfall - and thanks to our wet summer got a glimpse of its extremely rare 'twin'

What it lacks in height it more than makes up for in power. High Force in County Durham is believed to be England's largest waterfall by volume.

At 21m it's nowhere near the tallest - at 198m Cautley Spout in Cumbria holds that title. But for sheer litreage, power and the overall spectacle, High Force is untouchable, YorkshireLive reports.

In high season thousands flock to see High Force, at the top of Upper Teesdale. Few, however, see its 'little brother' because of the sheer volume of rain required to push him over the north side of the cascade.

By sheer luck, we visit after a night of almighty rain, proceeding weeks of unseasonably heavy rain. The sun is out today, the main waterfall is roaring with white water and even Mr Force's shy twin brother is playing out, albeit timidly in the form of a glorified trickle.

Of course, muggins Dave doesn't realise it's a rare thing so his otherwise acceptable photos only show Mr Force's shy twin peripherally. We've included a stock photo of when Mr Shy Pants was out in bolder form – not that it entirely makes up for Dave's oversight. He's been sent to the naughty step.

Even in dry conditions, High Force is quite something and to see it in full, um... force with the bonus of its little brother feels like a privilege.

It's off the B6277, five miles from Middleton-in-Teesdale.

The north side of High Force is part of the Raby Estate whom you have to pay (£3 per adult – tickets are available from the kiosk in the car park) to see it. It's a pleasant eight-minute walk through woods to see the waterfall close-up from the bottom.

The roar from this wide, one-drop cascade is magnificent.
