"I see no reason why" – Pundit drops big Fraser Forster future claim at Southampton

Former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer sees absolutely no reason why Southampton won’t offer Fraser Forster a new contract.

The 6 ft 7 goalkeeper is set to become a free agent this summer, with his current deal at St Mary’s Stadium running out at the end of the season.

Having started the campaign as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s second-choice keeper, all roads were pointing towards the 31-year-old leaving at the end of the season.

However, an injury to Alex McCarthy just before Christmas has given Forster the chance to showcase his talent, and he’s grasped it with both hands.

Including the FA Cup tie at Swansea in early January, Southampton have lost just twice with the £90,000-per-week stopper back in the side, which has included games against West Ham, Spurs, Manchester City and Manchester United.

According to WhoScored, he’s been Saints’ eighth-best player in the Premier League although that perhaps doesn’t do his recent form justice, with his return to the XI coinciding with Southampton’s best league run for some time.

According to The Athletic, Forster wants to stay on the South Coast and has been offered a new contract, although on reduced terms, and Palmer reckons that nothing is stopping Southampton from keeping him.

He told GIVMESPORT: “He’s played the last eight games and Fraser is playing well.

“He’s not old for a goalkeeper, so, if he keeps on playing and he’s the number one until the end of the season, I see no reason why they wouldn’t renew his contract.”
