In his playing career Stephen Hendry proved himself as an all-time great. But there's one current star he wouldn't fancy his chances against.
The King of the Crucible dominated snooker in the 90s, clocking up seven world title wins between 1990 and 1999 - becoming one of the biggest Scottish sports stars of his era. However he reckons that even he'd struggle if he was taking on Mark Selby, with the Jester from Leicester returning to form with a typically ruthless and controlled victory over Stephen Maguire at the Welsh Open.
And it's that kind of performance that Hendry believes sets Selby aside from his rivals when it comes to the quest for the biggest prize in snooker later this year. Hendry told the Snooker Club podcast: "Judd Trump has taken a bit of time off, so he’s getting himself ready for a big push at the end of the season. That's really exciting.
"If I was playing now I can’t think of anyone I’d rather not play in a long frame match in Sheffield than Mark Selby. I wouldn’t mind playing anyone else, but he can just completely outplay you and take you out the game. If he’s on form at the World Championship he arguably goes in as favourite, if he’s in that form.
"He’s got plenty of time too if you look at how Ronnie (O’Sullivan), John (Higgins) and Mark Williams are still playing at approaching 50 years old. He’s got plenty of time."
And those comments were echoed by Matthew Selt, who has faced Selby 17 times and won just six. He added: "He’s borderline unplayable when he’s at his best and I’ve been saying that for a number of years now. I think he’s the most complete player that the game has ever produced. Every aspect is at nine or above. He’s so hard to beat.
