'I'm a little bit surprised' - Sky Sports reporter shocked after 'out of the blue' Spurs rumour

Speaking to This Is Futbol, journalist Michael Bridge revealed his surprise at Tottenham Hotspur making a move for Everton forward Richarlison. 

The Brazilian is reportedly looking to leave the Toffees this summer following their relegation scrap last season. According to Footy Insider, Richarlison has told friends that he wants to play Champions League football and he is keen to sign for Tottenham.

From a Spurs point of view, they will be looking to add some much-needed attacking depth this summer – something Richarlison can provide. Bridge was still left surprised by Spurs’ interest in the Everton man, however, telling This Is Futbol:

“Out of the blue was the Richarlison interest. Got to say, I’m a little bit surprised, I think, if they’re going to spend mega money it’ll probably be in maybe other areas, but I think Tottenham fans are getting to a stage now and this is the respect he commands, if Antonio Conte wants him, then that’s good enough for them.

“But it’s a double-edged sword, isn’t it? It’s like Tottenham fans have always been desperate to see their club spend. And now many fans are going, what are you spending £50 million on him for? So he can’t win?”

We must admit, £50 million is a hefty fee for a player yet to play in Europe. Yet, such is the competitive nature of the market these days, it may be a fee worth paying. Under Antonio Conte, a player of Richarlison’s calibre would undoubtedly improve, lessening the risk of spending the money ever so slightly.

It’s clear that Spurs are building a side capable of comfortably finishing in the top four next season, and spending the money in order to reach that stability may be worth it. On paper, signing a forward who scored just 10 goals in 30 Premier League
