'I have been critical' - BBC pundit left eating his words over 'great' Newcastle 28 y/o

Neil Lennon was full of praise for Jamaal Lascelles during the BBC’s live blog commentary of Newcastle United’s victory on Tuesday evening.

However, it was not a smooth night for the Newcastle skipper, who saw a goalline clearance rebound off him and into his own net which put the Magpies on the back foot, only for him to redeem himself a few moments later when his header was bundled into the back of the net by Mason Holgate.

Lascelles then led his side admirably to just their third win of the season as he made five interceptions and seven clearances, as well as blocking two efforts from Everton players, setting the tone for the rest of the team to follow.

Lennon claimed he’s been critical of Lascelles in the past, but admitted that against the Toffees, he had a fine game and ‘led the team brilliantly’.

TIF Thoughts on Jamaal Lascelles…

It’s no surprise that Lennon admitted to being critical of Lascelles earlier this season, as it’s been a less than enjoyable campaign for the captain, who’s been part of the second-worst defence in the Premier League while also conceding three penalties himself.

However, last night appeared to be different, and it could well have been down to the fact that he now has serious competition for his spot. With new arrival and local lad Dan Burn only fit enough for the bench, he will surely be pushing for a starting berth once he’s recovered from a toe injury.
