‘I find it strange’ – Rooney asks why Aguero’s title clincher ‘has never been questioned’

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has criticised Queens Park Rangers’ role in Manchester City’s 2012 Premier League title win by suggesting that they wanted City to triumph.

This week marks the 10-year anniversary of Sergio Aguero‘s famous title clincher against QPR, which saw City win the league in dramatic circumstances after looking down and out.

QPR were 2-1 up until the 92nd minute, with City needing a win to secure their first ever Premier League title. Edin Dzeko managed to equalise in injury time, before Aguero struck in the 94th minute to spark wild celebrations inside the Etihad.

Rooney was part of the United side that were pipped to the title that day. Looking back on the drama after City unveiled a statue to commemorate Aguero’s goal, Rooney hinted at potential cooperation from City’s opponents.

“Paddy Kenny should have done better for a couple of the goals,” England’s record all-time goalscorer told The Sun. “City get the second goal and QPR kick it straight back to them and that’s never been questioned – I find that strange.

“Djibril Cisse celebrating after the game with the City players, but yeah listen it’s a historic moment in the Premier League so I’m sure that – if you are not involved as a Manchester United player, that’s probably one of the greatest moments in the league.”

Rooney, currently the manager of Derby County, has been linked with the Burnley job in recent weeks, but he has looked to play down those rumours as he gears up for a League One promotion push with the Rams.
