'I feel sorry for you' - Erik ten Hag hits back at criticism of Manchester United mistakes

Erik ten Hag bristled at the suggestion Manchester United's performances are reminiscent of their form last season.

United finished eighth in the Premier League in 2023-24, losing 14 games, and came bottom of their Champions League group. They salvaged the campaign with a stunning 2-1 FA Cup final victory over Manchester City that effectively ensured Ten Hag remained in charge.

However, United have won one of their four games this term, scored two league goals and conceded five to leave them with a goal difference of -3.

At his post-match press conference after the 3-0 drubbing by Liverpool at Old Trafford, it was suggested to Ten Hag that United's mistakes were akin of their previous seasons under the Dutchman.

Ten Hag was asked if it was down to the players or the coaching and said: "What do you mean? Maybe you can explain to me with the mistakes that we make regular."

The journalist replied: "Constantly turning the ball over in your own half, playing the ball out from the back, getting mugged, chances coming on the back of it, counter-attacks when you're outnumbered, giving up endless chances in your own stadium against your biggest rivals. With the greatest of respect, Erik, we've seen that for so long now."

"You are sure?"

"Absolutely sure."

"I don't think otherwise you wouldn't win trophies as we did against big opponents. So I'm sorry for you, I have another vision."

The reporter acknowledged United played "brilliantly" against Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May but that they were almost beaten by Coventry City in the semi-final.
