'I'd feel embarrassed to see him' - Nick Powell makes Sir Alex Ferguson admission

Former Manchester United starlet Nick Powell has admitted he'd feel 'embarrassed' if he met Sir Alex Ferguson again due to the way his time at the club transpired.

Powell was one of Ferguson's final signings as United boss after being snagged in a £7.5m deal from Crewe Alexandra in the summer of 2012. The then-starlet had dazzled in League Two and scored a stunning goal in the play-off final to earn his team promotion, as well as notching 15 goals in the league.

However, it proved to be too much too soon and Powell rarely featured at United, making just six senior appearances during his first season. He would spend the vast majority of the next three years on loan in the Football League before being released in 2016 with little fanfare.

Opinion: Ten Hag’s ruthless rule can turn around season

Powell went on to have a solid career at Wigan Athletic and then Stoke City and at 29 is now plying his trade just up the road at Stockport County. However, his time at Old Trafford remains a 'tainted' memory.

“If everybody who left Manchester United could talk to Sir Alex Ferguson they would, but he’d never be off the phone," Powell told MEN Sport, via SkyBet. "I’d love to meet him again, but for me my time is tainted at Man United, so I'd feel quite embarrassed to see him.”

One moment he does look back on happily, though, is his first goal for United which just happened to be against Wigan. “When I think back about times at the club or my goal against Wigan, I have a sense of pride." he added. "I do look back on fondly, it will always stick with me and I'm happy to have a goal at Old Trafford.”
