'I couldn't sit straight, I couldn't stand straight, I couldn't see'

A broadcaster has revealed that she blacked out after claims her drink was spiked while out with colleagues. Times Radio presenter Kate McCann told listeners that she 'didn't feel right' after taking a sip from a drink which her friend saw a man 'try to put something in'.

The 35-year-old managed to get a cab home, but said she does not remember the journey home and woke up at 4am on the floor in her bathroom. She was sharing her experience following an investigation by the Sunday Times into Britain's 'drink-spiking epidemic'.

The Manchester Evening News has reported a number of spiking claims - either by drink or injection - that have occurred in the city for years. In 2021, the M.E.N. spoke to young women who have been left too traumatised to enjoy a night out in the Manchester's bars and clubs.

Hundreds of people gathered in St Peter's Square earlier that year in support of a national boycott of nightclubs which Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham attended. It followed reports of young women in Fallowfield and the city centre being spiked.

Last year, Bolton MP Yasmin Qureshi called for spiking to be made a crime after a surge in reports, largely among women and girls, but also gay men. Spiking is illegal, but campaigners have been calling for it to be made a separate criminal offence amid a rise in incidents.

Parklife boss Sacha Lord has thrown his weight behind the calls to update the existing laws which date back to 1861. The Greater Manchester night-time economy adviser criticised the government last year for reversing plans to make spiking a specific offence.
