'I chickened out of gastric band surgery - then lost seven stone in a year'

A mother-of-three who “chickened out” of gastric band surgery due to potential complications has instead lost seven stone in one year with a diet plan and exercise and feels like a “new woman”.

Chanelle Alexander, 32, who lives in Barking and Dagenham, London, and measures 5ft 2in tall, reached her heaviest weight of 17st 13lbs (114kg) after having her third child in 2021.

Relying on takeaways and eating sweets and share bags of chocolates after meals, she believes she was consuming up to 3,000 calories every day – although she was not monitoring her intake at the time.

It was not until she looked in the mirror and did not recognise herself in March 2023 that she knew her lifestyle needed to change, and that is when discussions of bariatric (weight loss) surgery took place.

However, as the consultations progressed with doctors and she heard more about the potential risks and complications, she decided not to go ahead and later came across The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan.

With one-to-one consultant-led support and weekly weigh-ins, meal replacements and products, Chanelle followed her personalised plan from May 2023 and has lost seven stone, reaching 10st 13lbs (69kg) in June 2024.

Chanelle told PA Real Life: “It was amazing. I actually couldn’t believe it. It got to the point where I thought, ‘Oh my God, I’ve actually done this’.

“At the beginning of your journey, you don’t think it’s going to work, you’re just thinking, ‘Yeah, I’ve been dieting for years…’

“But when I saw 10st 13lbs on the scales, I thought, ‘Oh my God, I haven’t seen the 10 stone bracket in years’.”

Chanelle said she had “always struggled with her weight”
