Hythe Town manager Steve Watt sees the Cannons end dry spell in front of goal

Steve Watt's confidence in Hythe's goalscoring potential was vindicated on Tuesday night.

The Cannons had drawn blanks in four successive games in all competitions before beating Beckenham 3-0 in a rearranged Isthmian South East match.

Johan Caney-Bryan, Mitch Harman and Frannie Collin were the scorers as Watt's side moved up to 10th place.

They'd been creating opportunities, with Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Chichester a case in point.

“Defensively we’ve been very good in the league, and that’s not just the backline, that’s the whole team, but we need to start putting the ball in the net a bit more," said the Cannons boss, speaking before the Beckenham game.

“I’d like to add another forward if possible, which is easier said than done, but we’ve got goals in the team.

"We scored three at Sittingbourne, who were second in the table until Saturday, and we scored eight over two games against Raynes Park Vale in the FA Cup, so I don’t think it’s a massive issue.

"We haven’t scored in four (before Beckenham) but two of those are cup games where I made lots of changes, so you might not have that same fluency in the side.

"I can understand not scoring in those games but we do need more goals in the league.

"When games are tight against good sides, then nine times out of 10 if you score the first goal, you’ll win the game.

"Saturday was a great example of that. Chichester got the first goal and won; if we’d got it, I think we’d have won.

“It’s something we need to work on but I’d be more concerned if we weren’t creating chances.”

Hythe host Ashford in a Kent derby at Reachfields this Saturday (3pm).

Tommy Warrilow’s side sit third in the table after a bright start to the season and Hythe will need to be on their game.
