Hull KR legend set to replace incoming coach Willie Peters as Newcastle Knights' rebuild continues

Hull KR legend Michael Dobson is set to replace incoming Rovers coach Willie Peters as one of Newcastle Knights' coaches in 2023. As reported by Newcastle Herald's Barry Toohey, Dobson is going to be a transition coach at the McDonald Jones Stadium, focusing on bringing through the next batch of talent at the New South Wales club whilst also coaching the reserves and in charge of the pathway system at the Knights.

The 36-year-old is no stranger to the coaching world as the former Rovers star has been an assistant coach at NRL feeder club Wynnum Manly Seagulls for a number of years and has always hinted about landing an NRL or Super League gig in the future.

A Hull KR legend, Dobson played in 153 games during his time in East Hull, kicking 537 goals, plus 12 drop-goals, and scoring 53 tries. His 1,294 career points tally with the Robins makes him sixth on the club's all-time point scorers list. In 2009, he won the Rugby Leaguer & League Express Albert Goldthorpe medal for being the best and fairest player in Super League.

After leaving the Robins at the end of the 2013 season, he signed for the Knights and played six times during the 2014 season before returning to the UK to play for Salford Red Devils, although Dobson has admitted he wanted a second stint in East Hull, but by the time he'd spoken to Chairman Neil Hudgell, Rovers had maxed out their quota spots for 2015.

Arguably the greatest overseas signing Rovers have made in the Super League era, the Australian still holds a place in the supporters' hearts, and his game management and kicking game are still spoken about on the terraces to this day. With the Knights' enduring a torrid 2022 campaign, Dobson will be hoping to oversee the transition happening at the club
