Hull FC head coach Brett Hodgson explains Tex Hoy strengths after club confirm new signing

Hull FC head coach Brett Hodgson is delighted to secure the signing of Newcastle Knights playmaker Tex Hoy on a two-year deal. The 22-year-old will link up with the Black and Whites for the 2023 and 2024 seasons, with a club option of a third year.

Releasing Josh Reynolds mid-season, Hull had hoped to get Hoy in early this year, but an injury to Kalyn Ponga laid that to rest after talks had taken place between the two parties. Still, Hodgson has finally got his man, with Hoy joining a new-look spine next year alongside the likes of Jake Trueman and Jake Connor.

“Tex is a natural footballer, with the ability to create opportunities with his brilliant footwork and passing game," Hodgson told the club's official website. “He’s young and hungry to show that he can play consistently at this level; we’re really excited to have him on board for next season."

An exciting signing, Hoy can play either halfback or fullback, and has played both positions since debuting in the NRL in round 3 of the 2020 season. Since then, Hoy has played 23 games in Australia's premier competition, scoring three tries.

That versatility is something that excites Hodgson, who is looking forward to seeing Hoy link up with a much younger and faster squad next season.

“Tex is a real creator off the back of what other people can do," Hodgson continued. "He has that versatility being able to play in the halves or at full-back, but in space, he is able to play a similar way to that of Jake Connor, where he can hit that right pass at the right time, as well as having a really strong running game with speed too.
