Hull City boss Shota Arveladze set to play for Rangers against world legends

Hull City manager Shota Arveladze will play for a team of Rangers legends against a team of world legends to celebrate the Scottish club’s 150th anniversary. Arveladze joined Rangers in 2001 and helped them win the league twice, as well as bagging winners medals for the cup and league cup. He announced earlier today that he had been selected for the anniversary match, which will be played next Saturday at Ibrox.

Appearing alongside the Georgian for Rangers will be Giovanni van Bronkhorst, Paul Gascoigne, Sasa Papac, Michael Mols, Kris Boyd, Nikica Jelavić, Ronald De Boer and Barry Ferguson as captain. The world legends team will be captained by Luís Figo, who will be joined by Claude Makéléle, Iván Córdoba, Ricardo Carvalho and Predrag Mijatović. Others in the team will be Robbie Keane, Roberto Carlos, Gheorge Hagi and Robert Pires.

The Hull City boss tweeted today about being selected, posting on his account: "I am happy to take part in the match on March 26. This game is special to me because it marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of the club where I had a wonderful time. I look forward to meeting friends and @RangersFC supporters!”

In an earlier announcement, Figo said of the match: “I have many fond memories of Glasgow thanks to winning the UEFA Champions League there in 2002 and the Weekend of Legends at Ibrox is set to be another memorable occasion.”

The fixture comes during a break in the season, with Hull City not playing again until April 1, when they will host Huddersfield. Yesterday’s loss to Luton Town left them in 20th place in the table.
