Huge M6 delays with all traffic stopped in police incident - latest

All traffic has been stopped on the M6 this afternoon following an accident near Greater Manchester.

Motorists on the M6 Southbound before J17 A534 Old Mill Road (Sandbach / Crewe) are facing long delays as emergency services race to the scene.

On X, North West Motorway Police urged drivers to 'be patient' as queues build. It is not yet clear whether anyone has been injured.

The latest update from live traffic service Inrix reads: "Severe delays and two lanes closed due to accident on M6 Southbound before J17 A534 Old Mill Road (Sandbach / Crewe). Congestion to after J18 (Middlewich / Holmes Chapel). Travel time is around one hour minutes."

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "At around 2.10pm on Monday 29 July, police were called to a collision on the M6 Southbound between junctions 18 and 17.

"Police attended and found there had been a collision involving two cars and a HGV.

"One of the cars had overturned and there were a number of pedestrians on the carriageway.

"Lanes 2, 3 and 4 of the southbound carriageway have been closed, along with lanes 3 and 4 of the northbound carriageway.

"Paramedics attended the scene along with the air ambulance. There are no details on injuries at this time."

Traffic is still stationary on parts of the M6 southbound this afternoon as two lanes remain closed.

Drivers are being warned of delays of one hour as traffic slowly gets moving again on the M6 this afternoon.
