Huge blow: Liverpool dealt late injury setback ahead of MCFC, Klopp will be sweating - opinion

Liverpool are one step away from reaching the FA Cup final ahead of today’s semi-final showdown with Manchester City.

The Reds last took on Pep Guardiola’s side as recently as last weekend, with the Premier League meeting ending in a 2-2 draw after Liverpool twice came from behind to rescue a point.

Having then made it through to the semi-finals of the Champions League thanks to a 3-3 draw against Benfica at Anfield in midweek, the Merseyside club turn their attention to the FA Cup this time out.

Looking ahead to this afternoon’s match at Wembley Stadium, it seems as though the club will be sweating over the fitness of one of their key players.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Klopp had this to say about the fitness of Diogo Jota.

He said: “I said [on Wednesday] that Diogo got a knock – that swelled up slightly directly after the game, obviously while I was in the press conference. Diogo, good chance he will be alright but we need to have a closer look [on Friday]. That’s it.”

Taking this into account, it seems as though the Reds boss will be sweating over the winger’s fitness and how he reacts to the knock he picked up in midweek.

Since arriving at Anfield back in the 2020 summer transfer window from fellow Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, the attacker has made 73 appearances for the club across all competitions.

Over these outings, the Portuguese international has found the back of the net 34 times, highlighting how much of an attacking threat he is for the team.

Having scored against City in last weekend’s league clash, it’s safe to say that Liverpool would certainly prefer to have the £54m-rated attacker in their squad today to see if he can hurt the Manchester club on the pitch once again.
