Huge blow: Leeds United now facing "worrying" setback that'll leave Marsch sweating - opinion

Leeds United face a “worrying” blow over Illan Meslier, according to former goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

The Whites came from behind to beat Wolves just over a week ago but suffered a number of casualtiest that night, including Meslier, who was forced off after a hefty collision with striker Raul Jimenez.

Robinson has now admitted that any sort of absence for the Frenchman would be a damaging blow for Jesse Marsch’s side and questioned the club’s lack of depth in the goalkeeping department.

He said: “The injury list is worrying and the one for Meslier is the most worrying for me.

“Klaesson is untried and untested and this was my worry from the beginning of the season, if anything would happen to Meslier, they haven’t got another experienced goalkeeper. Meslier’s done outstandingly well again but without him, it’s going to be a real strain as there’s no strength in depth in the goalkeeping area. Meslier’s going to be a huge miss.”

In an update for The Athletic earlier in the week, Phil Hay revealed: “Illan Meslier, part of France’s under-21 squad for a European Championship qualifier against the Faroe Islands and a friendly against Northern Ireland, was also taken off in that game (at Molineux) and is likely to miss out for his country. The goalkeeper will have a scan on the hip injury he sustained against Wolves.”

Meslier has been a virtual ever-present for Leeds since he took over the goalkeeping reins on a permanent basis a couple of seasons ago, and the Frenchman’s absence for any length of time would represent a serious blow for the Whites.
