Huddersfield Town transfer stance revealed after link to Rangers starlet Kyle McClelland

Highly-rated Rangers prospect Kyle McClelland has been linked with a number of Championship clubs including Sheffield United, Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town after news emerged that he looks likely to leave Ibrox this summer.

The Scottish Daily Express report that the 20-year-old centre-back wants first-team football elsewhere after spending this season playing B team football, and the expiry of his contract this summer would allow him to assess his transfer options.

The Northern Ireland under-21 international does fit the kind of profile of player the Terriers look to recruit for their academy, which has no age group lower than under-17s and focuses on signing up players who slip the cracks at other clubs.

However, understands that in McClelland’s specific case, the transfer link to the John Smith's Stadium is wide of the mark and he is not currently on Town’s radar as a potential summer signing.

Carlos Corberan already has a number of talented young defenders available to him. Rarmani Edmonds-Green has excelled on loan with League One runners-up Rotherham United this season, while Romoney Crichlow was impressive enough in his own loan at League Two Swindon Town to earn a move up a division to Plymouth Argyle in January.

Teenage French centre-back Loick Ayina is also well thought-of by the club and has been spotted training with the first team alongside fellow B-teamers Etienne Camara and Pat Jones.

Town have also been linked with a summer move to bring academy graduate Will Boyle back to the club from League One side Cheltenham Town. A natural left-footer, Boyle could be a candidate to replace the out-of-contract Naby Sarr as a first-team back-up option.
