Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United promotion hopes could be affected by unpredictable factor

Trying to make sense of the Championship table and who might be best placed to clinch a place in the top six can be difficult enough in a regular season. Throw in this year's postponements for covid and weather reasons, and the league table is almost indecipherable.

Huddersfield Town head coach Carlos Corberan has long insisted that the league table is not a reliable indicator of anything, with his third-placed Terriers the only side in the top ten who have avoided any postponements this season.

That gives everyone around them - including Sheffield United - the chance to make up ground in the promotion race.

Fulham are so far clear at the top that their own games in hand are of academic interest, but Bournemouth face an incredibly busy schedule with four games to make up before the end of the season.

Town fans should probably put any hopes of automatic promotion out of mind, though, with three of the Cherries' games in hand coming against sides currently in the bottom half of the table.

Sheffield United and Middlesbrough are fancied by bookies to make it into the playoff picture, with their managerial changes in November bringing about a dramatic improvement in their fortunes.

However, something will have to give as Paul Heckingbottom will go head to to head his former boss Chris Wilder in one of the Blades' postponed games.

United's other game in hand could also prove tricky as another promotion contender, Queens Park Rangers, still need to visit Bramall Lane.
