How PSG's Champions League capitulation will affect Mauricio Pochettino's Man Utd hopes

Paris Saint-Germain’s humiliating Champions League exit will not affect Mauricio Pochettino’s chances of landing the Manchester United job.

Pochettino is the leading candidate to become United’s new permanent manager this summer with Ajax boss Erik ten Hag also in the running.

The Argentine looked to be heading into the Champions League quarter-finals with PSG on Wednesday night, leading Real Madrid 2-0 on aggregate with just half an hour of the tie remaining.

The French giants were eliminated after conceding three quick goals, however, marking another failed European campaign for the club.

While PSG are 13 points clear at the summit of Ligue 1 the Champions League failure has been viewed as a blemish on Pochettino’s record, with his only silverware as a manager a Coupe de France success last year.

But according to The Athletic, United’s decision whether to bring Pochettino to Old Trafford will ‘not be overly influenced by a single result’.

The report adds United are also aware this is not the first time PSG have capitulated in Europe. United themselves came from behind to eliminate them at the round of 16 stage in 2019 while the Parisians famously threw away a 4-0 lead to crash out at the hands of Barcelona two years earlier.

PSG sporting director Leonardo said on Wednesday night that PSG do not intend to change their manager before the end of the season.

But former United striker Michael Owen suggested Pochettino will already have one eye on his next job following the defeat.

‘I don’t think he will mind,’ Owen told BT Sport when asked how Pochettino will react to Wednesday’s elimination.
