How much does Cardiff City’s squad cost compare to all other Championship sides?

Cardiff City have pulled away from the relegation battle in style this season under Steve Morison.

There were real concerns under Mick McCarthy, and Morison for a brief period, that the club could suffer relegation to League One this season.

Given the Bluebirds finished in the play-offs in 2019/20 and just outside them in 2020/21, it would have been a calamity to face the drop in their third and final year of parachute payments.

There has been a clear push to reduce spending in the transfer market and for Morison, the former U23s manager at the club, to integrate younger players into the first team which he has done very successfully on the whole.

It has been a rocky period since Cardiff’s relegation from the Premier League in 2018/19.

From Neil Warnock to Neil Harris to Mick McCarthy to Steve Morison, until now there has not really been a clear direction and therefore the Bluebirds have overall underperformed back in the Championship.

Morison embodies a figure of hope for the future, and it will be interesting to monitor their summer transfer window activity in looking to address the cost of their squad.
