How Liverpool’s stats after 29 games in 2021-22 compares to last season

After a difficult 2020-21 season, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have put that behind them and are now back to their best in 2021-22.

Liverpool, who were the defending champions, were plagued by a series of injury problems last season and suffered some embarrassing defeats.

The Reds looked set to miss out on Champions League qualification but eventually turned things around and finished in third place.

“I never thought more about football, and I think a lot about football, than in this period,” Klopp said when reflecting on last season. “How can we make it work? How can we make it so we just have a chance?

“That was really tough, while everyone was talking about the former champion and now the worst-ever defending champion. Thank you very much, that was really nice.

“Yes, it was an incredibly intense season and, yes, I was more than happy for a holiday. For the first 10 days, I didn’t take one time the phone out or whatever and ask ‘could we have this player?’

“I couldn’t have cared less at that moment, just get through it and that is absolutely true. Why shouldn’t managers be different? But for all of us it was the same. We were all like really drained. Just finished. Done.”

Liverpool then signed Ibrahima Konate in the summer and the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip returned from their long-term layoffs.

Klopp’s side are now back on track and they are involved in another thrilling title race with Manchester City, who are currently one point ahead of them.
