How is ex-Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka getting on at the moment?
Appointed by Middlesbrough in 2013, it was always going to be intriguing to see how Aitor Karanka would fare at the Riverside Stadium in what was his first coaching job in English football.
During his first season in charge of the club, the Spaniard led Boro to a 12th place finish in the Championship standings.
Middlesbrough fared better at this level in the following campaign as they secured a place in the play-off final under the guidance of Karanka.
However, Boro were unable to secure a return to the Premier League at Wembley Stadium as they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Norwich City.
Undeterred by this setback, Middlesbrough achieved promotion in Karanka’s third season at the club as they finished second in the Championship.
Unfortunately for Boro, they failed to establish themselves in the top-flight as they experienced an incredibly disappointing 2016/17 campaign.
With his side three points adrift of safety, Karanka was sacked by Middlesbrough who were eventually relegated from the Premier League following this departure.

Following a year out of the game, Karanka was appointed by Nottingham Forest as their manager in January 2018.
The 48-year-old was backed in the summer transfer window as the Reds spent a fee believed to be in the region of £13.2m for Joao Carvalho.
Despite the fact that Forest emerged as contenders for a play-off place in the 2018/19 campaign, Karanka left the club in January after a breakdown in relations with the club’s hierarchy.
Karanka was handed over the reins at St Andrew’s in 2020 as Birmingham City decided to turn to him for inspiration following the departure
