How does Maguire's form compare to his opposite numbers in top six?

Harry Maguire's fortunes have undulated since he joined Manchester United in 2019 as the world's most expensive defender, but few moments at Old Trafford have been as tough as the present.

His form and captaincy continue to be questioned, as is his continued selection by interim boss Ralf Rangnick, reportedly by some of his own United team-mates amid all the alleged in-fighting at the club this season.

He was dropped to the bench for the goalless draw against Watford last weekend, and there are seemingly no guarantees he will be restored to Rangnick's starting XI for this weekend's Manchester derby.

The England international's form has dipped alarmingly this season and even Rangnick admitted recently that Maguire has suffered some 'weaker moments'.

Former United stars Rio Ferdinand and Michael Owen have been among his most severe critics this term, and the focus on him is likely to increase in the summer once the transfer window opens.

Sportsmail understands while Rangnick has been publicly supportive of Maguire, a new centre-back will be high on United's list of targets in the summer, with the likes of Antonio Rudiger and Ronald Araujo among the candidates to partner Raphael Varane in 2022-23.

But to have a strong chance of attracting that world-class talent at the heart of the defence, United will need to qualify for the Champions League again, a race which is only adding intensity to the scrutiny Maguire is facing.

United sit in the final qualification spot as it stands, but Tottenham and especially Arsenal are expected to provide them with stiff competition to finish in the top four this season.
