Households warned to avoid clearing leaves from gardens for vital reason
Households are being warned not to clear away leaves from their garden during the cold weather spell for one vital reason.
Gardening experts are urging Brits to delay tidying up their outdoor space to avoid disturbing creatures that may be tucked away under fallen leaves.
During autumn and winter, wildlife needs extra support due to the drop in temperatures changing their environment and survival strategies. Although spring is just around the corner, some animals will still be nestled in garden foliage, seeking warmth and shelter.
Therefore, leaving piles of fallen leaves in your garden can provide a safe haven for hedgehogs and other wildlife.
Garden boss and founder of GardeningExpress.co.uk, Chris Bonnett, is encouraging people to leave fallen leaves and other debris alone to protect wildlife whilst the weather is still cold.
“It’s been a cold start to the year with plenty of frosty days over the past few weeks," Chris said. "Wildlife needs our help during the autumn and winter more than ever and you can help them by simply leaving one area of your garden untouched.
“We’re encouraging gardeners to leave a small pile of leaves in their gardens as a simple act of kindness to our animals. This is a really easy way to help out our furry friends and it takes virtually no effort."
He advised that when you do decide to clear leaves up, it's vital to check them carefully for any hidden wildlife.
“When you do decide to clear up the leaves it’s important to be mindful before raking them in case there is wildlife nesting there," he said. "Gently move the leaves and listen out for any movement, if you sense that wildlife is present it’s best to leave the pile untouched.”
