‘Honored’: Saudi trio share the bill on Anthony Joshua’s ‘The Comeback’ fight with Kristian Prenga

JEDDAH: Three of Saudi Arabia’s leading professional boxers are set for “The Comeback” boxing night on Saturday, July 25, at Jeddah Superdome, which will be headlined by Anthony Joshua taking on undefeated Albanian heavyweight Kristian Prenga.

The participation of the Saudi trio comes as part of their efforts to strengthen their presence on the international professional scene alongside an elite group of the most prominent professional boxers from around the world.

Mohammed Alakel will face Malta’s Lydon Chircop in a six-round lightweight bout; Ziyad Almaayouf will take on Mexican Frank Mango in an eight-round welterweight contest; while Sultan Al-Mohammed will meet Spain’s Efren Besalduch in a four-round super featherweight bout.

The three young Saudi boxers on Tuesday night expressed their motivation and excitement for the upcoming fights. They also highlighted their extensive preparation and eagerness to make their country proud.

In preparation for the event, Almaayouf expressed “his happiness” to fight at home and in front of his local fans.

He revealed that he had spent three months in an intensive training camp in Los Angeles under the supervision of the world-renowned coach Buddy McGirt, and he hopes to put on a performance that will please the Saudi audience in Jeddah.

For his part, boxer Alakel, known as “Mighty,” shared his delight at the great contribution that the Kingdom has made to the sport of boxing globally, saying: “Since the beginning of hosting the Riyadh Season and boxing championships, the popularity of the game has increased globally and not just locally.”
