Hockey India elections: Dilip Tirkey favourite to become president; Bhola Nath frontrunner for secretary general post

Tirkey, who is the country’s most capped player with 412 international appearances, has challengers for the president’s post, with the Uttar Pradesh hockey body’s chief, Rakesh Katyal, and Hockey Jharkhand’s head Bhola Nath throwing their hats in the ring. But, as things stood on Monday, Katyal was contemplating withdrawing his nomination in support of Tirkey, while Bhola Nath could be rewarded with the secretary general’s chair for supporting Batra during his difficult times. Tirkey would then be left as a sole heir to the chair, after the HI was placed under the Committee of Administrators’ (CoA) for violating the provisions of the national sports code.

Tirkey’s nomination also has a background story. The player-turned-politician is Odisha’s long-serving chief minister Naveen Patnaik loyalist and a former Rajya Sabha MP from Biju Janata Dal (BJD). He has already ventured into sports administration as the chairman of the Odisha Hockey Promotion Council (OHPC) and is one of the selectors in the HI’s national selection committee.

By backing Tirkey’s candidature, HI would be expressing its gratitude to Odisha government’s wholehearted support to promote Indian hockey. The state government has been the official sponsor of the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams since 2018 and would continue to support them for another 10 years after the end of the current sponsorship deal in 2023. In 2018, Odisha had signed a 100-crore deal with HI for sponsoring the teams for five years.

It’s been also learnt that several of the HI’s state member associations have pledged their support to Tirkey. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is September 23. For Bhola Nath, the race to secretary general’s post will see him contesting
