His terrified victim frantically tried to flag down drivers for help - nobody stopped

A man chased a stranger walking home from work before dragging him into a doorway and forcing him to perform a sex act. Rida Awof, 30, set upon the man, who was in his 20s, in the early hours of January 31 last year.

The victim was making his way home from a night shift when he was approached by Awof, who tried to start a conversation. He 'continually harassed' the man, police said, as he followed him.

Awof pressured the man to go home with him and 'perform sexual favours', before becoming aggressive. He chased his victim across a main road, before dragging him into a doorway and forcing him to perform a sex act.

The terrified man ran away, frantically trying to flag down passing drivers. Nobody stopped to help.

Awof caught up with the man, before kicking and punching him. A nearby security guard then stepped in and protected the victim.

Forensic analysis of the man's clothing matched a partial DNA sample from a previous arrest, leading officers to identify Awof as a suspect.

He pleaded guilty to oral rape at a hearing at Minshull Street Crown Court in May. On Friday (July 21), he was sentenced to six years and four months and told he will face deportation.

Detective Constable Annabel Lewis of GMP's City of Manchester district said: "I want to acknowledge the victim of this horrific incident. I know the past 16 months have been extremely difficult for him.

"I commend the victim for their bravery throughout this investigation and for having the courage to report this information. Because of their report, we were able to find and remove this individual from our streets.
