Hibs closing in on signing of ex-Celtic winger Aiden McGeady

The ex-Celtic and Everton winger is a free agent after leaving Sunderland and his old Black Cats boss Lee Johnson is keen for a reunion at Easter Road.

The Evening News has learned Hibs are confident of sealing a deal for the 36-year-old who would become the club’s eighth signing of the summer already.

Johnson was coy about the speculation regarding his former player when asked about the link on Sky Sports News on Friday morning.

He said: “I have got a strong relationship with Aiden, he is a fantastic player with unbelievable feet. He gets to the corner of the box then often there’s an assist or a shot at goal.

“He is 36 so whether it’s us or anyone else he has nothing to prove but a lot to prove as well.

“He is a maverick, he is a challenging but inspiring character to have in your squad and whoever gets Aiden McGeady for a year or two will have an exceptional player and person."

David Marshall, Nohan Kenneh, Lewis Miller, Jair Tavares and Momodou Bojang have all joined the club this summer, while there was permanent deals given to Rocky Bushiri and Ewan Henderson after joining on loan from Norwich City and Celtic, respectively.

Johnson is looking to recruit athletic players who will fit a fast-paced, attacking approach. In McGeady he sees someone capable of unlocking stubborn defensively by giving the side greater creative ingenuity in the final third.
