Helmut Marko: Pierre Gasly plays an important role for Red Bull

AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly will remain at his current team until he is free to go in 2024 and has no exit clause in place says Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko.

So far during the 2022 season, Gasly has been a consistent finisher, picking up points three times along with three DNF until the current F1 summer break.

When the F1 season returns on 28 August at Spa-Francorchamps, Gasly will start his 100th grand prix having first started for Red Bull five years ago as a junior driver.

What makes the 26-year-old Gasly important to Red Bull is that he is the ideal go-to guy should anything happen or they need to replace to either Max Verstappen or Sergio Perez.

In an interview with Motorsport-Total, Marko admitted that Gasly has improved a lot since his bad time at Red Bull a few years back, saying: "Gasly was lapped by Max in Hungary 2019.

"He's certainly more solid now, has a lot more self-confidence, but it's difficult to say to what extent he could hold his own against a Verstappen."

Marko added that he was also impressed by Gasly's teammate at AlphaTauri, Yuki Tsunoda, saying: "Yuki is doing lap times which is already at his level but not quite like that in the race…"

"We improved Gasly's contract financially, although we didn't have to do it," Marko added.

In the drivers' standings, Gasly is 13th with 16 points while teammate Tsunoda has 11 points and is 16th overall.
