Helmut Marko has revealed the issue behind double Red Bull retirement

Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Mako has revealed that the same issue led to the two Red Bull cars of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez retiring in the closing stages of the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Charles Leclerc led home the field for his first win of the season, with Carlos Sainz coming through in second place to seal a Ferrari one-two.

Lewis Hamilton joined them on the podium, meanwhile, as Verstappen and Perez saw 2nd and 4th place cruelly taken from them through technical issues.

Indeed, it was certainly eyebrow-raising to see both cars suffering faults within a matter of laps of one another, with Verstappen out just before Perez, and Marko has revealed that they suffered the same fate – a problem with fuel getting to the engine.

As revealed by Tobi Gruner on Twitter after Marko had spoken to Sky Sports Germany, both Bulls had the same problem:

Talking to @skysportformel1 Helmut Marko confirmed that both Red Bull cars had the same problem with not getting enough fuel to the engine. Verstappen also suffered from a power steering issue that might have been caused by the jack during a pit stop. #BahrainGP #F1

There are undoubtedly going to be some in depth discussions being had at Red Bull in the coming days to understand why this happened and how it is going to be prevented from happening in the future.

A double retirement is very costly – Red Bull were on for 30 points this afternoon – and with Ferrari getting a one-two and Mercedes coming home in third and fourth, it couldn’t have gone much worse for the Bulls.
