Heartless thieves steal Nathan Sobey’s Tokyo Olympics bronze medal from Brisbane home

An Olympic bronze medal belonging to Australian basketballer Nathan Sobey has been stolen after his Brisbane home was burgled on Saturday night.

The 31-year-old was part of the Boomers team that won the first Olympic or World Cup medal in Australian men’s basketball history at Tokyo 2020 last year following several near misses.

“Unfortunately last night our house was broken into and my bronze medal was stolen along with some other small things,” he wrote.

“If anyone out there has any information please let us know.”

Sobey played for the Brisbane Bullets on Saturday night in a victory over the Tasmania JackJumpers at the Queensland State Netball Centre.

The game went ahead in front of 2600 fans amid south-east Queensland’s devastating floods.

Sobey won the bronze medal - nicknamed ‘rose gold’ by the team - in August last year and spent two weeks in quarantine before celebrating at home with family and friends.

His house was targeted just six weeks after he and his wife celebrated the birth to their second child.

Basketball Australia and Sobey’s Olympic teammates Joe Ingles, Matthew Dellavedova and Aron Baynes have urged the community to help find the medal.

“We’re devastated for Nathan,” the Brisbane Bullets said.

“We’re extremely grateful that he and his family are safe and as a club we’re here to support them through the process of working with the QLD Police.

“If anyone has any information please contact QLD Police.”

Sobey previously won a Commonwealth Games gold medal with the Boomers and represented Australia at the 2019 FIBA World Cup, when the team finished fourth.
