'Has to be' - Manchester United fans split over Donny van de Beek promise

Manchester United supporters continue to provide a mixed response to Donny van de Beek being promised more game time when he recovers from injury. Van de Beek is currently sidelined with a muscular problem and is among four players who could miss the Everton game on Sunday.

Signed from Ajax two summers ago, the 25-year-old and his struggles to break into the United line-up on a regular basis have been well-documented. Van de Beek has only played 19 minutes in the Premier League this term after he was sent on loan to Goodison Park in January.

He will not have the opportunity to take on his temporary former teammates. However, with matches set to come thick and fast throughout October and the winter months - either side of the World Cup - Van de Beek will be given chance to justify Ole Gunnar Solskjaer paying £35million for his services in 2020.

Speaking about the former Ajax playmaker during his press conference, Ten Hag said: "He has to be fit. Obviously, that is his disadvantage. He is now for two-and-a-half years here. He had a pre-season that was quite okay and his chances will come.

"When he came on against Brighton as a substitute, he did very well, but you have to be available and if you are not available you can't get a place in the first XI. And so, now, he has to make sure he gets fit and fights for his position."

Van de Beek played under Ten Hag in Amsterdam and was part of the talented Ajax team that defied the odds to reach the Champions League semi-finals in 2019. However, while Ten Hag knows the 19-cap international better than anyone, United supporters are unsure whether or not that will lead to him fulfilling his promise at Old Trafford.
