Harry Maguire reacts after Rio Ferdinand pointed finger at Man Utd captain
Harry Maguire has responded after former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand singled out the England international for his role in Burnley's equalising goal at Turf Moor.
It was another disappointing night for United as Paul Pogba's early strike was cancelled out by Jay Rodriguez shortly after half-time, and now Ralf Rangnick's side have subsequently dropped out of the top four.
Burnley are never an easy opponent, but they have been abnormally weak this season and there's no surprise that they're rooted to the bottom of the Premier League with just one win, scoring just 17 goals in 20 games.
But United captain Maguire was beaten with ease as Burnley grabbed two points off the Red Devils - and the defender has responded to harsh criticism from Ferdinand.
Although it was neat attacking play from Burnley to grab a valuable equaliser, it was poor defending from United's perspective who were guilty of being complacent against the Clarets, but Ferdinand singled out Maguire for the goal.
Ferdinand said on BT Sport: "There's McTominay, he's your protection, all he's got to do, Maguire, is keep pushing him away, he hasn't got to over-commit, as soon as he over-commits, it's a great piece of skill, this pass is sublime, if Kevin de Bruyne does that [Weghorst pass] we’ll all be going crazy.
"This touch across Maguire takes him completely out of it. I don't think Maguire is quick enough to have got there to affect that situation once it got beyond him.
"It's about stopping it at the source, once he had the big number nine, keep him facing [away from] the goal, he's got the security of McTominay in front of him, he can deal with him a little bit, these are small mistakes leading to big moments."
