Later in the half, seconds after making a run in behind the defence that wasn't seen he was back in front of Ruben Dias to collect the ball again.

As much as Guardiola won't have enjoyed watching it against his own team, it will only have added to the already-lofty regard that he holds the England captain in. If the two men had their way last summer Kane would have been turning out in Blue at the Etihad.

And while Erling Haaland takes priority this summer, Kane's performance was a reminder that City are better off not crossing the Tottenham striker completely off their wish-list.

Tottenham spoil wing plan

Riyad Mahrez was dropped to the bench despite his excellent goalscoring form, with Guardiola preferring to bring Raheem Sterling over to the right and start with Phil Foden on the left.

However, if two natural wingers were expected to stretch the Tottenham defence it didn't work like that as the North London side instead held the middle ground and refused to be breached. After only 20 minutes, the City manager had seen enough and switched his wingers.
