Hampden hero almost tempts St Johnstone boss Callum Davidson to settle Hibs stalemate

Callum Davidson is counting the cost of a draw at Easter Road against Hibs – fruitless in the end without a goal for either side.

However the Saints manager was forced into several substitutions with players picking up injuries in a battling draw with Shaun Maloney’s side, in front of a bumper crowd at Easter Road.

Hibs’ initiative of ‘Football for a Fiver’ saw another large crowd take in a re-run of last season’s Scottish Cup final, and the injury situation even tempted Davidson to call upon one of his Hampden heroes.

"We had to make three changes due to forced injuries,” Davidson rued, before laughing, “I was almost going to bring Shaun Rooney down from the stand in the second half to play right wing-back!

"It was one of those games and, in the end, I am quite happy with the point,” the Saints boss admitted.

After two narrow defeats to Ross County and Rangers within a week, the stalemate means the Perth side remain one point clear of bottom side Dundee, who also drew at Motherwell, but after plenty of endeavour – from both sides – neither could make the breakthrough and Davison believes it was a fair result with neither doing enough to merit all three points.

He said: "It was one of those games that was a bit like a boxing match. Both teams were sparring, but neither team managed to land any punches.

"I thought we both tried to have a go and get into good areas, but the quality in the final third let both teams down.”
