Hair transplant surgery slammed by inspectors after dirty mops and mould found

A hair transplant surgery in Manchester city centre has been slammed by inspectors after dirty mops and mould were found at its Deansgate clinic. The Hair Growth Centre at Speakers House in Deansgate has been rated inadequate following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The clinic, referred to as Deansgate Surgery in the CQC report, was found to be inadequate in three out of five areas and requires improvement in another. The safety, effectiveness and leadership of services were all criticised by inspectors, although the report said patients were treated well by staff.

This was the first time the private surgery was inspected by the regulator which returned two months later to find some of the site was still unclean. Two warning notices relating to safe care and treatment and good governance have been issued to the surgery which has been placed in special measures.

This means that the surgery will be inspected again within six months and if insufficient improvements are made, it could be closed down by the regulator. However, the Local Democracy Reporting Service understands that the surgery will be contesting some of the findings in the inspection report.

This includes allegations that 'visibly dirty' mops were used to clean clinical areas at the surgery which had 'no spare mop heads', according to the report. A large area of mould on a wall was also spotted in one clinical room, the inspection report revealed – but the surgery said this room was not in use.
