Gunman still on the loose after teenage girl shot in the street

Police are continuing to hunt for a gunman after a teenage girl was shot in the street in Moss Side.

The 16-year-old girl was hit by a single bullet after a gunman opened fire at a crowd outside a party on Quinney Crescent on Friday night (July 29). She was taken to hospital, though fortunately she did not suffer serious injuries.

Detectives said the shot was fired from a car in the horrific attack. Pictures showed a pellet-ridden car at the scene, which the Manchester Evening News understands was caused by a shotgun.

In an update issued this morning (Monday), police said they are still hunting down the attacker. No arrests have been made since the incident.

After the shooting, stop-and-search powers were stepped up in the area. Police said they were using the increased powers to 'prevent violence involving weapons'.

In a statement, Chief Superintendent Robert Cousen, commander of GMP's City of Manchester division, said: “My thoughts are with the victim whose physical injuries are thankfully not serious, but that does not diminish what could’ve happened here as incidents of this nature are always reckless, serious and risk lives being lost.

“We’re doing all we can to unpick the circumstances of this incident and to ensure that whoever is responsible is caught and brought to justice. This involves a lot of work that has been going on overnight - and continues into today - on Quinney Crescent and the surrounding area, as well as extensive investigative work beyond the scene to progress this investigation as quickly as possible.
