Gumberg lands SDC Championship in play-off

American Jordan Gumberg said winning his first DP World Tour title at the SDC Championship in South Africa was beyond anything he had dreamt of.

The 28-year-old edged out home favourite Robin Williams in a play-off at St Francis Links after carding a flawless 68 in his final round.

Williams, who was born in South Africa before moving to Britain as a child, had led for much of the day after carding four early birdies but he surrendered a double bogey at the 17th to finish alongside Gumberg on 12 under par after 72 holes.

And after both men safely parred the first play-off hole, Gumberg nervelessly holed his birdie putt from around 15 feet at the second extra hole to enter the winner's circle for the first time at this level.

Gumberg said at the trophy presentation: "I'm so thankful to be standing here.

"It means everything. I never really got this far in my dreams. So I'm kind of at a loss for words but it means everything.

"It's what we fight for every day, it's what we practise for, it's the early hours, the late hours, everything. This is incredible."

Ireland's Tom McKibbin failed to put himself in the mix for the title with a closing 72 to end up in a tie for 12th.

Frenchman David Ravetto finished alone in third place on 10 under, two ahead of Scot Connor Syme,

Welshman Jamie Donaldson, Englishmen Andy Sullivan, Daniel Brown and Marcus Armitage, and Germany's Nick Bachem in a tie for fourth.
