Group seeks welfare of LAWMA sweepers

LAWMA sweepers

A Lagos-based non-governmental organisation, PEPC Foundation, has stressed the importance of protecting Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) sweepers.

The founder, PEPC Foundation, Lukman Akinsanya, made the call during the empowerment of 700 sweepers in Ikorodu with relief materials.

The theme of the event was: ‘Love beyond Christmas’.

Akinsanya extolled the importance of the sweepers in Lagos, describing them as the vanguard of the state, who perform their duties diligently by ensuring environmental cleanliness.

He said the project started three years ago with the empowerment of 250 workers, but was expanded, this year, to cover the entire Ikorodu area.

According to him, the intention is to reach the entire state through partnership, next year, with inclusion of medical checks and nutrition assessment.

The chairman of Igbogbo Local Council Development Area, Olusesan Mayokun, said the council partners with LAWMA to cater for the welfare of sweepers in the area.
