Grosjean not plotting F1 return with Andretti…yet

Romain Grosjean is not currently viewing the prospective Andretti Global Formula 1 entry as a route back into the series.

Grosjean enjoyed an extensive career in F1, making 179 starts across stints with Renault, Lotus and Haas before departing the series at the end of 2020 in search of a new challenge, landing in IndyCar as he cited the possibility to win as a strong pull factor.

The 2022 campaign will mark his second season in IndyCar and first with the Andretti Autosport team, whose owner Michael Andretti is planning to enter a team called ‘Andretti Global‘ into Formula 1 as of the 2024 season.

So could that clear the way for Grosjean to make an F1 return? At this stage, it is not on the Frenchman’s radar.

Speaking to The Race, he said: “I think I will focus on IndyCar right now. I’m really enjoying it.

“I’ve had an amazing career in Formula 1, I never thought I would do 10 years and 10 podiums. But I think Formula 1 is behind me at the moment. I’d rather focus on IndyCar.”

But that is now. Grosjean admits his mindset could change a few years down the line.

“Maybe things will change in a couple of years,” he suggested.

“I’m really focusing on IndyCar, I fit really well in the States. It’s quite funny to move to a different continent, different language, and feel so good.”

So while Formula 1 is not currently on Grosjean’s agenda, two IndyCar drivers are being repeatedly linked with a switch.

Pato O’Ward represented McLaren at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Young Drivers’ Test, making it clear he would be open to joining Formula 1 if a seat became available, while Colton Herta is the IndyCar driver with a seemingly clearer path into the series.
