Grand National 2024 live results, places and updates from Aintree

The Randox Grand National takes place on Saturday afternoon with hundreds of millions of people across the world expected to tune in to watch.

The race, dubbed the most famous steeplechase in the world, will see 34 horses gallop four miles and 2½ furlongs and jumping 30 fences during two laps Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool.

However, those watching the race at home or from the stands will notice some major changes this year that have been introduced in a bid to reduce the number of fallers and other incidents.

The biggest change is reducing the maximum number of runners from 40 to 34 to try to cut the number of horses and jockeys that fall. There will also be an earlier start time of 4pm, as well as a change to the first fence, a lowering in height of the 11th, and scrapping the parade of the field before the race.

Ahead of the race Sulekha Varma, clerk of the course a AIntree, told the BBC that they have had to react as races have become faster due to the higher quality of horses that now take part.

Heading into the weekend last year's winner Coach Rambler, being ridden by Derek Fox, was among the favourites. Other fancied horses include I am Maximus - the winner of last year’s Irish National - and Meetingofthewaters.

Coverage of the Grand National starts on ITV at 12.55pm with the race starting at 4pm.
