Graeme Souness is wrong about Man United captain Bruno Fernandes - but he does make one good point

Even Bruno Fernandes admits that not everyone will like his animated style of on-pitch leadership.

“There are people who like it, others who don't like it,” the Manchester United skipper conceded back in March. "There are people who see pointing as bragging, because for us in the field it is difficult to convey messages in the way we are here talking. It's practically impossible.

"Normally, we have to use our arms more, gesture. We are too far away from each other to be able to understand the messages we want to convey to each other." Former Liverpool captain Graeme Souness clearly doesn’t buy it. Speaking on the Three Up Front podcast, he portrayed Fernandes as an example of poor leadership.

He said: "When you look at leaders in the modern game, one example is at Manchester United which is one of the biggest institutions in world football. The club captain is Bruno Fernandes.

“When they were 3-0 down against Liverpool a couple of seasons ago [the 7-0 defeat in March 2023], he just threw the towel in… he's the captain! If anything, he should still be contributing, running around with enthusiasm and helping his teammates.

"I don't think Fernandes can change that aspect of himself – it's part of him. When he's shrugging his shoulders and throwing his arms around, that's just him."

Fernandes did contribute as much as he could in adverse circumstances, making the most passes out of any attacking player and tallying the joint-highest most shots in the 90 minutes. The playmaker was visibly frustrated and at one stage appeared to push an assistant referee
