Graeme McDowell misses out on US Open spot at Dallas qualifier

Former US Open champion Graeme McDowell has missed out on a place at next month's edition of the tournament at Los Angeles Country Club after coming up just short in qualifying.

Eight places were up for grabs at the 36-hole qualifier at Bent Tree Country Club and Northwood Club in Dallas, with 2010 US Open champion McDowell missing out on a five-man play-off for the remaining two qualification places after three-putting the last at Northwood to finish in a share of 12th on seven under.

Rounds of 63 and 62 saw American Carson Young storm to top spot in qualifying on 16 under, with Young's compatriots Austin Eckroat, Brent Grant, Paul Haley, Jacob Solomon and Hank Lebioda, Canadian Roger Sloan and former Masters champion Sergio Garcia securing the other coveted places.

Garcia missed last week's US PGA Championship – the first major in 24 years for which he had not been present – after joining the LIV Golf Series and therefore not being high enough in the world rankings.

An opening-round 66 at Bent Tree Country Club left him two shots off the projected qualifying line but he produced a back-nine rally in his second round at Northwood, including an eagle at the 14th and a birdie at the last, to card another 66.

"I played well and I knew what I needed. I didn’t want to be in a play-off. I’ve done that before. It’s pretty scary," Garcia told golf.com.

Irish amateur Luke O'Neill finished on five over after consecutive rounds of 73.

There are 10 more qualifiers taking place across the United States on 5 June.
