Government Secondary School Karu, Topfield College win Nestle Milo Basketball Championship

Government Secondary School, Karu, Abuja and Topfield College, Ajegunle, Lagos State, at the weekend, won the boys and girls’ categories of the 23rd Nestle Milo Secondary Schools Basketball Championship held at the National Stadium, Lagos. 

Government College Karu defeated Father O’Connel Science College, Minna, 46-43 in the final game of the boys’ category to emerge champions, while Lagos’ Topfield College beat Government Secondary School, Karu, Abuja 53 -50 to earn the girls’ title.    The final matches of the boys and girls category kept the fans on their feet as the teams sought ways of going home with the crowns. Speaking after his boys’ triumph, Government College, Karu, Abuja coach, Andre Abeche, praised his players for their commitment and mental strength in the final game.    “It was a tough game that could have been won by our opponent, but we are happy for the victory at the end,” he said. Joshua Augustine from Government Secondary School, Karu, FCT, won the Most Valuable Player award in the boys’ category, while Uchechi Augustina from Topfield College won the girls’ Most Valuable Player award  (MVP).

Explaining his team’s route to success, Coach of Topfield College, Godspower Anokam, said hard work and dedication took his team to success.    “We won this game because we were well prepared for it. We were in camp for two months and did all that was necessary to perfect our victory. It is a big victory for our team and we will go back and continue to work harder and develop youths at the grassroots level,” he said.
