Golf: Top player to get N1m as organisers promise funfilled Nigeria Cup

The winner in the professional category of the Nigeria Cup, which tees off tomorrow, will earn N1 million for his efforts, the organisers of the championship have said. The Nigeria Cup will tee off tomorrow at the IKoyi Club, Golf Section, with kid golfers taking to the field.

According to the organisers, the second and third-placed professionals will get N750,000 and N500,000 as prize money respectively.

Speaking at a pre-event press briefing, the chairman of the 2024 Nigeria Cup Organising Committee, George Etomi, said that the spirit of harmony through recreation which the club is known for will be the focus of this year’s competition, adding that every member of the Ikoyi Club community will participate in this year’s edition.

He affirmed that the competition will officially tee-off tomorrow with kid golfers taking turns on the course while Sunday has been reserved for a segment of the competition tagged “Golf for Good Event.”

On Monday, caddies will have their way on the golf course before lady golfers take to the stage on Tuesday, he said, adding that a special Nigeria Cup Kitty has been fixed for Wednesday, September 25.

The committee said that it will host sponsors, guests, and veteran golfers on Thursday, while Saturday, September 28 is the grand finale and the day a new Nigeria Cup winner will be crowned.
Mike Makinde, who shot 67-net in last year’s edition, is the tournament’s defending champion.
